Hello. Class was good today, I think if everyone can keep up we will have a great class.
I'm curious what everyone thinks of Sotomayor?
I'm reading the Washington Post Article "Sotomayor Confirmation Hearings Begin With Senators' Statements".
The article does an excellent job remaining neutral, as we covered in class this morning.
I am starting to realize that the fight here is not actually about Sotomayor, it is a tool for both parties. (Hence I wonder where everyone stands).
Take this statement sited from the same article:
"Democrats are betting that an overly zealous assault on Sotomayor by Republican senators could anger Latinos and accelerate the shift of Hispanic voters away from the party, particularly in the South and West. Conservatives are hoping to use the Sotomayor hearings as a way to motivate their base if they can successfully portray her as an activist judge whose "empathy" for certain groups guides her rulings more than court precedent or the written law."
I support her appointment, because I can find little I believe against her.
The opposition sited 5 comments she made which are racist in nature, but they measured in a period of an entire decade. That seems like a very long time for only 5 mistakes. I think if she was truly using race for a bias it would be much more evident.
I agree that class went well today. I'm looking forward to each of us using each other's knowledge and various experiences to improve our own abilities.
Sotomayor appears to be a logical and useful pick for the Supreme Court, and a perfect choice to help President Obama further his liberal-leaning agenda. Similar to FDR's presidency, Obama must deal with an intense economic recovery program. Obama must hope that the Supreme Court will not destroy his attempts to reform the economy. FDR had a major problem with that.
