I feel as though every teen in the young scholars program enjoys the college life and the living arrangements without any parently guidance, however there is extreme responsibilty when it comes to living on your own.
Starting with academics, I think everyone feels very appreiciative becasue they dont have their parents breathing down there necks about homework and study time, however sometimes that parental guidance is needed. Through adequate amount of downtime, new friends, and campus activities its hard to focus on academics. There's were the real independence comes in and you have to choose friends over education, and most of the time peer pressure wins.
Secondly, the eating habits get worse by the day. Usually parents make sure that you have a well- balanced meal, however, when on your own, a well- balanced meal has a whole new meaning. Typically a well- balanced meal is pizza, chips, soda and ice cream which is usaually food that tires you out, and again looses your focus on your academics.
Journalism 150, tell me about you new semi- college experiences and how great you are with time management.

I have never been to a summer program where every scheduled activity-besides class-is optional. Its a beautiful thing to actually help me balance my time and focus on my work. I have noticed though, with all the free time, I have no idea what to do with myself. Sometimes, I will just end up on the computer for a couple of hours looking up different college facts. Granted that is what i do at home, this time should be used for studying. College is different than home life. And I am only gradually getting used to it.
ReplyDeleteThat is part of this project. It is partially about learning Jornalism better than we can with the typical kids who take High School Journalism because there are tons of "Free Periods".
ReplyDeleteThis course is in large part to see how we can handle college life. We aren't under very heavy survallence 24-7 because they want to see how we do controling ourselves under largly our own authority.
I've been to a series of camps and seminars that allow some sort of independence, but YSP ranks the best when it comes to gaining insight on the college experience. I too have times when I don't know what I should do next, but meeting all of these different people and having so many options is so cool.
ReplyDeleteNot only am I learining about how classes may be and how my independence has to be at its maximum in college, but I'm beginning to fall in love--with the Uninversity of Maryland!!
I feel like a have a lot of free time and, like Michael,I don't really know what to do with it. I'm sure all of this will change once I start writing my paper, but it is strange to be on your own having to balance making new friends and having fun with doing all of your school work. Like Will said, it is not just about the course, but about how to survive college life. But I find it's actually really fun. I just wish I had a laptop because it is so hard to focus in the library.
ReplyDeleteI really have little trouble with the class. Its the friends and fun part. I'm tring to get over being so introverted... I like you all but I'm having touble fitting in with the group.
ReplyDeleteAnyone else like this. I'm not complaining, I've made friends, but I seem to be spending little time with any group.
We should have a big journalism class lunch/party or something to break the ice.
ReplyDeleteI like that idea.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the lunch thing and what I've notcied through this experience is that i'm much more relaxed than I am in high school. Usually, I panic over getting homework done and will only hang out with friends on weekends. It's nice being able to spend time with friends AND get my homework done.
ReplyDeleteHey guys my birthday is Monday the 27th, (the day our bibliography and synopsis is due lol) and some of the people I've been "chillin" with are trying to throw a semi-party. If people fromt this class want to come you're more than welcome. It may just have to move outside though, because that would be a lot of people.
ReplyDeleteI'm really trying to convince my mom to bring in a huge cake, but if that doesn't happen my roommate said we could just bake some stuff. And if all of that fails we'll get some desserts from the dining hall and just chill outside!
I know that day is more towards the end of this program, but it would still be a good way to meet more friends and have a good talk with each other. The journalism lunch/party thing also sounds great.
