Radio Station

Hi everyone.
I am really excited to go to the radio station tomorrow. I think it will be really neat to see the process ones go through in order to report news on the air. Personally, this will be my first time going to radio station. Has anyone else been before? Also, what do you all think is the most effective way of getting out the news? Maybe by print or web? Radio or T.V?
Tell me what you think.

  1. It's hard to pick just one because they all have positives and negatives.
T.V. is effective because it provides both a visual and an audio, which can really catch your attention.
The perks of radio are that it is easy to just turn on in your car or your room and you can get other things done while listening.
Print is the most fun to read because you can sit in a comfy chair while reading. And I'm not sure if the same goes for anyone else, but I prefer the feeling of reading a hard copy of something than reading it online.
The web is the most addicting way to read news because there is an infinite amount of links you can click to different stories. Often, when someone sends me a link to a good story, I end up reading that one, plus five others that have links from that page. I find that with online news you read more articles than if you use another source.

So I guess I think that the web is the most effective because you can read more articles in a short amount of time, but I really rely on all of them depending on the day, so it is hard to choose just one.

  2. It should be fun to see a radio station, but I think (and don't tell!) that radio has a decreasingly important role in modern media. There's a certain intimacy in it that you can't attain through TV or print, but for practical applications, it's losing. You can get video through TV and through the Internet, so radio has a major disadvantage. That being said, it's the best place to hear news and songs at the same time.

  4. Brooke,
I am also really excited to go to the radio station, it will be my first time too! Hmm, it's hard to pick out which form of getting news across is the most affective. I know that personally for me i'd have to say the internet. I say this because mostly everything I do involves the internet; school, connecting with friends and family, getting up to date with what's going on in the world, etc... Like Michael, I also believe that the radio as a source of news is becoming less important. Instead of listening to what’s going on in the world while driving somewhere, most people, including myself, listen to music or a c.d.. Although, I do that think that all of the different ways to learn about what’s happening in the world are important. It depends on the person and how they choose to receive news!

  5. I agree with Michael. Although the radio still remains a resourceful media outlet, I feel it is the most primitive. I don't know about you, but a certain image of a family in the 1920s gathered around the radio and listening to the nightly news comes to mind when I think of the radio. Today, we have more accessible ways to receive our news. With the internet and newsprint, we have the facts laid out in front of us; with the television, interesting news stories become mental pictures in our mind long after the news is over. Even though the radio provides the same news information as other media sources, music is the radio’s most precious gift.

Moreover, I found a connection between blogs and the radio. On talk/chat radio, DJs, journalists and guest callers voice their opinions on subjects ranging from politics to relationship advice. Callers can phone-in and ask questions or contribute comments on-air for other listeners to hear. So, do you think the blog community could possibly have early origins in the radio?

Regardless, I am still anxious to see the radio station! It should be a fun morning.

  6. Margo, I agree completely. Just as TV and print media are dying because of the Internet, the radio is dead because of the TV and the MP3 player/CD player. While it's commonly listened to in the car, in my experience, the average American does not listen to the radio for news or entertainment at home. They would most likely rather resort to the Internet or television. Of course, some radio stations are still highly listened to. For example, NPR. Many rely heavily on NPR for distinguished newscasts.

And I too have never visited a radio station. I have truly never seen broadcast journalism in action, except for when I wrote a feature about the morning announcements crew at my school and sat in on a couple of their recordings. (http://www.thewarrioronline.net/article/?id=277&ch=Features) So this will hopefully be a really enlightening experience!

  7. Unrelated post: Andi, who designed your newspaper's website? I love it. I want to make a website for my newspaper.

  8. I think the fastest way to get news out is through the web, but I think the most effective way is through television. I think it is easier for most people, including myself, to just turn on the t.v. and watch the news than to turn on the computer, wait for it to load, and then go onto the internet and website. I also think radio is a vey effective way because almost everyone who is driving has his/her radio on. Print is an important part of American journalism. Many Americans look foreward to picking up their papers from their driveways every morning and reading them while drinking a steaming cup of coffee.

In the end, I think it is tough to decide which form is the most effective in getting news out to the supporters.

I too, am excited to go to the radio station tomorrow. A couple of years ago I went up to New York on a family vacation, and we stopped by NBC Studios (I know it's not a radio station, but it still has to do with journalsim). We got to take a tour of the studio and it was amazing. Also, my brother got picked to do the weather, so they showed us how the meteorologists do their jobs. It was an experience I will never forget!

  9. I agree with most people. I think the fastest way to get news out is definitely the web. People are always on the computer and its always updated. The most effective way is tv or radio. The radio is probably on in most peoples car. Everyone listens to the radio. And for tv, everyone watches it. You could turn on the tv and see anything that just happend. Those are the most effective ways to get news out
