When the picture of Gates being led out of his home by cops was put in the paper, I remembered that we all wondered how a reporter got to take that picture. Had he or she simply been there at the right time?
It turns out that a neighbor took the picture.
They also released the phone conversation between the woman who called 911 and the police. Apparently, she did not mention the race of the men she saw trying to break down Gates's door.
"Going through this whole experience, I have already identified a number of things that the department can do better," said Police Commissioner Robert C. Haas.

I think Gates brought a lot of this on himself. The cop didnt have to necessarily arrest him, but he wouldnt have done it Gates wasnt berating him.
ReplyDeleteNow, the media and the people are against this officer who I believe is not totally at fault. Its like these things become a big deal when its based around notable person but when the real cases come up the media overlooks them.
For example, the case of Oscar Brown in Oakland, where police shot him in the back after a New Year's party this year. Of course, because Oscar Brown is a normal person he doesnt get the same media time as someone who like Gates, who already has those connections in high places, no matter how severe the normal case is.
The real problem with racial profiling does not exist in cities like Cambridge where crime is generally low anyway, it happens in the cities, where there is more crime, and more people to blame.
Im sorry Michelle if that digression added nothing to your original article. I just have been very frustrated lately about this whole thing.
The whole situation and the excessive coverage over it is frustrating, I agree.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that the true cases do not reach the public.
However, hopefully the coverage of this case, although more of an accident rather than racial profiling, may help to expose the real problem in future cases.
Thanks for your comment.
It seems that both Gates and Crowley are twisting the stories to make themselves the victim.
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere (possibly not true however)that sometime this week both of the men are supposed to meet with the president at the White House. If this is true, I hope the men will settle their differences and tell the public the story as it happened.
