Women in News

Hey Guys.
I really enjoyed listening to Professor Carol Rogers today. I thought that it was interesting to learn how even today there are still issues of racism and sexism in the job world. I also thought it interesting to learn that women, who hold the same job as men, make lesser money than men.
What can one do to change this? Is there anything? Or are we just stuck in this situation? What do you think the future holds for women?
Tell me what you think

  1. Education of all members of society, and especially public figures and movers such as journalists, is the key to unlocking equality in the future. Our best hopes are in our generation and beyond.

  2. In journalism, I think continued study of how women are referenced in news and bylines with women could show the world of journalism the ineqquality. If a paper's staff were to see their inequalities by numbers they are more likely to make a conscious change.

As for the position of women in society in general, I think that if the information we learned today is not taught to the general populace, women will stay frozen in unseen oppression.

  3. Today’s dose of news from usatoday.com features a sexist quote from North Korea’s Foreign Ministry. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton sometimes “looks like a primary schoolgirl and sometimes a pensioner going shopping.” Now, would this quote ever be pointed toward a male, saying that he looks like a schoolboy and likes to go shopping? This insult was personalized toward Clinton because of her sex, and the word choice was demeaning, making her out to be a young girl. Now it is clear that sexism does not just exist in the United States, but across the world.

I agree with Ann and Michael when they say education is the best policy. Obviously, the North Korean Foreign Ministry doesn’t know who they are dealing with.
